Moving Day Aches and Pains

by Dr. Ammie Chapman, D.C.

You have purchased a new home, congratulations on being a home owner.  Now, you have to move in, decorate, paint and give the house a style that reflects you.  Here are a few tips to make the process a little less achy and painful for you.  First of all the achy muscles you feel the day after moving may be prevented by taking vitamin C (up to 1,000 mg/day) for 4 to 5 days prior to moving.  Second, let us focus on the moving and lifting.  It is very important to use your legs when you lift instead of bending forward at the waist.  This also means that you should brace your abdominals while bending your knees to pick up boxes.  I know that you will feel like you are sticking your butt out, but it is the proper way to lift.  It is very important that you keep the normal curve in your low back while lifting, even small items.  Some of the worst cases of back pain come from people that bent over to pick up a box weighing a pound or less; please don’t overlook the small items.  Third and final item of importance is to remember that your feet move.  I mean that instead of lifting and twisting at the waist to move a box, you should lift and move your feet, instead of twisting, to place the box where it needs to be.  Good luck and keep these items in mind to help eliminate the aches and pains associated with moving.

Tax Credit Update

by Yvonne Kelly

October 20:

A step closer to getting the expected extension of the $8K income tax credit for first time buyers today. Sen. Dodd went on record that he wants to extend the tax credit seven more months after it is set to expire at the end of Nov. We fully expect the Obama administration will go along and extend it. The housing sector is key and needs any help it can get from Washington.

October 21:

Huge pressure increasing on Obama to extend the first time homebuyers tax credit. Today a full page ad in the NY Times from NAR and NAHB to extend it. We fully expect it will be extended, if not Obama will take heavy hit as will the Democrats, and of course that isn't what politicians like to do.

Should I Buy a Home Now?

by Damian Forrester

I'm often asked if this is a good time to buy a home. Some clients are concerned that home prices may fall further than they have already. They are assuming that the best course of action is to wait for the bottom in the market and then buy. The problem with this approach is that you don't know where the bottom is until you see it in the rear view mirror, meaning until you've missed it!

Home prices are one factor in determining your cost of ownership, but so are interest rates and financing availability. Even though interest rates have gone up in the last six months, they are still near historic lows. Since your monthly mortgage payment is a combination of paying down your principal and paying the interest owed, if home prices come down a little further but interest rates go up, it could cost you even more to service a mortgage on an identical home!

While a home is a major investment, it is also the center of your personal life. It's important to live in a home that reflects your taste and values, yet is within your financial "comfort zone." To that end, it may be more important to lock in today's relatively low interest rates and low home prices, rather than to hope for a further break in prices in the future.

Please give me a call if I can be of any assistance in determining how much home you can afford in today's market.
